US UK Tax Returns

Disclaimer

Everything on this site is written to help you understand the rules and ask better questions. None of it is advice on your own position.

General information only

The guides, articles, form explanations and FAQs describe how US and UK tax rules generally work. They cannot take account of your citizenship, residence history, income, assets, elections already made, or the years still open. Two people who look alike on paper can end up in very different positions.

Figures are dated

US figures on this site are for tax year 2025 unless another year is stated. UK figures are for 2025/26. Thresholds, rates and allowances change, many of them every year, and a figure that was right when written can be out of date when read. Each page links to the official source so you can check the current figure.

No outcome is guaranteed

Where the site describes relief, a penalty route or a planning option, it describes what the rules provide, not what will happen in a particular case. Tax authorities decide individual cases on their facts, and positions can be challenged.

Two countries, two sets of rules

The site covers United States federal tax, some state tax matters, and United Kingdom tax. It does not cover the tax rules of other countries, and US state rules vary widely. If you have ties to a third country or a particular state, the answer may differ.

Before you act

  • Check the figure or rule against the official source linked on the page
  • Consider which tax years are affected, including any not yet filed
  • Take advice from a qualified adviser who has seen your full circumstances
